New Work

These paintings were made during the pandemic and depict family members cocooning with me or who I saw on Zoom. I’m asking, “How do we navigate intimacy when so much of our experience is through technology?”

These paintings were made during the pandemic and depict family members cocooning with me and others I only saw on Zoom. A cell phone has a complex role in modern life, almost a personality. We talk about it technologically and miss its intense presence and impact.

On Zoom we see odd crops, peoples heads and just a little bit of their hand.  Would we ever have cropped a figure in this way before?

Maria@ Alice Neel-Met / 30" x 40" / Oil on Linen

Bather / 42" x 60" / Oil on Linen

In my painting I am reflecting on what we are actually doing, now.

I want to explore what painting can do when we think and communicate with images.

Cocoon / 30" x 40” / Oil on Linen

Paddleboard / 36" x 48" / Oil on Canvas

I leave areas of raw canvas or pencil lines because I feel we are undone, unfinished and in a liminal space. The dog is half out of the frame.  Things are not contained and out of control.

In these paintings you will see areas of raw canvas or just pencil lines.  We are undone and in between. The dog is half out of the frame.  Things are not contained and out of control.

I use cell phone or zoom photography as a source for my painting as I use it as memory in my life.

I use cell phone or zoom photography as a source and transform, simplify and abstract.

She holds the cell phone as in a prayer, ritual or Mudra.  This gesture, never seen before, is now part of our lives.

She is like a Madonna holding the cell phone-as in a prayer, ritual or Mudra.  This gesture, never seen before, is now part of our lives.
